no_mobile_co5The digital age of constant, streaming information and social media has us perpetually connected – whether we like it or not. For some, the “not” is the crux of the issue. Technology has presented humans with communication, experiences, and insights that they would not otherwise be privy, but it can also come at a price. Our smartphones can often make it possible for us to mainline knowledge at an exponential rate while simultaneously alienating those closest to us. In a time when human development is at an all time high, it can seem like actual physical interaction is suffering from a continental drift.

While there has been a marked decrease in the amount of time we spend interacting with each other in “real life”, there are those who make a concerted effort to detach themselves from their smartphones and reconnect with their relationships. By creating device-free zones, reminders, and incentives, a creative few have carved out a way for them to maintain their digital relationships while also improving the quality of the time they spend with their loved ones. For those who lived fast-paced lifestyles that require them to be constantly on-call or on the go, digitally disconnecting may be a little more difficult than it is for others, but making small measures can add marked improvements for those looking for even a moment of reprieve.

A digital vacation can last from a few minutes to a few hours. Sometimes, it can be as simple as turning your phone off or leaving it on silent. Designating an allotment of time, or a detox block, where you restrict access to all phones and/or other screens may provide the opportunity to fully enjoy the time you spend relaxing or bonding with your friends and family. It’s especially beneficial for young children who can easily pick up bad habits and spend countless hours glued to technology. Taking a break from your smartphone might be the smartest thing you do all year.
