Digital detoxIn Australia, 63.97 per 100 people use mobile phones. By 2010, almost seventy-five percent of households in Australia had internet access. In an international poll, eighty-four percent said that they wouldn’t be able to unplug for even one day. That number has surely increased by now. Technology has become an avenue for global communication. At work, at play and everywhere in between, we are all connected. Maybe this is a good thing, maybe not. Some of us are not able to unplug our devices for even a second. The world has become obsessed with instant gratification. News, shopping, social media, and so much more is available with a simple click of a button.

Due to this overwhelming sense of IT addiction, the newest craze is a digital detox retreat. This trend is surfacing all over the globe. Many high-end hotels are now offering digital detox retreats complete with activities such as yoga and spa appointments. The idea is to turn the devices off for the entire trip. Many resorts and hotels implement a rule that visitors hand in their cell phones and laptops upon arrival. As difficult as it may be to part ways with your digital addiction, after a few hours it will feel refreshing.

It is possible to recharge your mind and body without recharging your cell phone battery. Think of it this way-your laptops and iPods shut down without recharging. Why should it be any different for your body? The amount of constant stress people experience on a daily basis may result in headaches, high blood pressure, depression, and heart problems. A relaxing retreat is just what the doctor ordered. From Mexico and Costa Rica, to New York and California, hundreds of health-conscious individuals are jumping on the digital detox bandwagon. They rest, recharge, and go home with a renewed sense of purpose.
