While some see results in calorie restriction and cardio, others see speedy weight loss with weight lifting and intermittent fasting. Even still, there are those who swear by high-protein/low-carb diets, and it’s a way of eating that has seen popularity among the weight-conscious for decades.

For many, high-protein diets are a way to shed kilos while retaining and/or building muscle mass, which can often suffer as a result of extreme dieting. The source of protein for these diets is usually centered around animal based sources (meat), such as lean beef, veal, chicken and other poultry. There are also plant based protein sources that can be incorporated into these diets, including soy, whey, legumes or tempeh. Supporters of high-protein diets tout their effectiveness, as dieters often feel full while also seeing a spike in their metabolism.

While high-protein diets such as Atkins or the Dukan diet may be effective in the short term, their long-distance efficiency is still up in the air. Diets that completely restrict carb intake can potentially lead to other health issues, such as nutritional deficiencies or malnutrition. Additionally, eating fatty meats and dairy over a long period of time may also pose potential heart health issues, contributing to an increased risk of heart disease.

For those looking to give high-protein diets a go, sticking to lean proteins and incorporating more plant-based protein sources seems to be a safe bet. Foods such as beans, fish, and skinless chicken are all ideal when considering lean proteins as an integral part of a high-protein diet. Consulting with a physician prior to attempting a high-protein diet would be best, as they could rule out any potential complications, including liver or kidney issues, as those organs will be putting in a lot of work on a high protein diet.
