vege chipsThe world is on a health food craze. This is great in theory, but as the masses turn from high fat options to lower fat alternatives, they may in fact be exposing themselves to higher levels of even more harmful substances than fat. Listed below are several deceptive so-called “healthy” options that are no better or even worse for you than the originals.

Vegetable Crisps

These are one of the most surprisingly bad for you snacks. Vegetable crisps are made the exact same way as potato chips and are loaded with salt and fat. Baked tortillas are a much healthier alternative.

Low-fat Frozen Meals

These are often marketed as lean or diet friendly products. Unfortunately, in place of the fat (which acts as both a preservative and flavour agent in most foods) these frozen meals substitute in a host of chemicals including butyalted hydroxytoluene, which is a carcinogen. These foods also contain a great deal more salt than you should be consuming in one meal.

Fat-Free Popcorn

This one can be hard to swallow, since popcorn is often falsely believed to be a healthier alternative to other salty snacks. Unfortunately, the fake butter used in fat free popcorn is loaded with chemicals that are potentially poisonous, including diacetyl, which has been shown to cause respiratory illness in the workers at factories that process it.

Gluten Free Cookies

Unless you are suffering from Celiac disease or a gluten allergy, these should be avoided. People often mistakenly assume gluten free means healthy. Case in point: two gluten free gingersnaps have more calories than seven traditional gingersnaps, and as much saturated fat as 10 McDonald’s chicken nuggets.

Fat-Free Turkey

Many people turn to turkey as a lower fat alternative to other meats. However the pre-packaged turkey you buy at the grocery store marketed as low-fat or fat-free generally contain almost a third or your daily salt intake per serving and some use carcinogenic preservatives. Buy fresh from the daily or carve up a bird yourself whenever you can.
