Motivation Is Key To Diet Success

motivationdietYou had the best of intentions, but you fell short again. You convinced yourself that this time it would be different. That fourth piece of pizza would not get the best of you. But, sadly, it did. You then spent the next several days punishing yourself. As if that wasn’t enough, you ate an entire pint of ice cream while watching Dr. Phil on TV telling you why you fail over and over again. Sound familiar?

Look, we have all been there. Dieting is not for the faint of heart. It is a huge commitment. It is a commitment that can only be made when you reach rock bottom and there’s no other way to go but up. What is the number one reason why people fail at dieting? It is setting the goal too high instead of focusing on small steps. It makes sense. We are all guilty of envisioning the end result and forgetting the distance it takes to get there. The small steps are the milestones we need in order to get excited to reach the finish line. Rome was not built in one day! But, they probably didn’t need to go on too many diets…just look at how sexy they all looked in their togas.

It’s important to remember that you didn’t gain the weight in a few short weeks. It will take a while to take it off. Try finding a diet buddy for support. Research shows that dieting and exercising is more successful when there’s a partner to share the struggles and/or setbacks. A diet buddy will encourage you and, in turn, you will support her.

Most importantly, recognise that you may have to be flexible with your plan. Accept small setbacks as learning experiences and then don’t repeat those same mistakes. Patience, support, and motivation will get you there. You just have to believe in yourself.
